Johnson Farms Inc, Plant Nursery and Sod farm

History of Johnson Farms

What is known as Johnson Farms spans to an approximate 2,000-acre portion of the countryside in Deerfield, New Jersey. Business coupled with a rich history of family tradition has seen this company through some 94 years of diverse agricultural practices.

In 1910, Charles F. Johnson moved to the small town of Deerfield located in the heart of southern New Jersey and purchased 185 acres of farmland. Twenty-five years later, another 193 acres were added to his dairy and potato/vegetable farm. By 1952, Charles Johnson and his two sons, Albert and Donald ran the farming operation known as Charles Johnson & Sons. In 1957 tomatoes were added as a new crop, primarily for well-known companies, such as, Hunt’s, Ritter’s and Campbell soups. Then in 1962 the Johnson’s decided to go out of the dairy business and added green beans to the line of crops to help support the local frozen food processing plant known as Seabrook Farms. By this time, Charles Johnson & Sons were widely recognized by their community and neighboring states as a large potato grower with a big share of their crop sales going to potato chip companies, such as, Herr’s, Wise, Frito-lay and Eagle snacks. With the passing of their father in 1968, Albert and Donald, continued to farm, changing the name to Johnson Farms. The two brothers, over a 20-year span, acquired over 775 acres to add to their farming operation. Other vegetables were raised, namely, sweet corn, spinach, peas and soybeans. In 1982, Donald’s three sons, Donald himself, and brother Albert, united in ownership to create “Johnson Farms, Inc.”

After the closing of Campbell soup in 1986, the Johnson’s were looking for new crops to grow. They had already stopped growing potatoes, green beans, spinach and peas because of low prices. With knowledge and confidence the Johnson’s expanded into sod farming in 1988 and two years later added nursery products for the consumer. Today, these two products are the staples that make Johnson Farms a reputable name in the agricultural industry.

The next generation of brothers, Donald Johnson, Jr. who oversees the nursery operation and David Johnson who oversees the sod operation, continue to honor their fore fathers tradition of agricultural practices by maintaining and delivering high-quality products to the consumer that reflects the same pride, values, and commitment to their customers as did their forefathers.
